Unite Against Racism Conference

23/01/2009

   Few days ago NGO “Karpaty” received the invitation to 3-rd “UNITE  AGAINST RACISM” conference in Warsaw. Over 200 delegates from FAs, leagues, clubs, NGOs and media will take part in this event.

     UEFA is trying to achieve following objectives:
                           - to raise awareness of the problems of racism and discrimination n football among the members of the football family;
                               - to put forward positive and practical solutions for addressing racism in football;
                         - to share examples of good practice in different settings and amongst different actors – clubs, NGOs and fan groups.
     The seminars will seek to convey the views of experts and experienced practitioners on a range of themes, within an interactive setting. Delegates are asked to bring their own experience and knowledge to the process. Each workshop will have an appointed chair and rapporteur. Workshop sessions will be launched be one short expert introduction speech on the topic in question.
Workshops overview “United Against Racism”
A)      Roma minorities and football.  Can football offer a positive means of bridging better relationships between the Roma minority and the wider population, or can’t it only reinforce their exclusion?
B)      Football against racism and discrimination. Racism and violence are both a feature of football in the East and often accompany each other. How can we utilize fan cultures as a positive force for change?
C)        Ethnic Minorities in Football.  The face of football everywhere is changing as players are being recruited from across the world. How can football offer protection from abuse and exploitation in both professional and grassroots leagues?
D)     Tacking institutional discrimination. What challenges face us once abuse is no longer a factor? Will we ever see the type of diversity in coaching, management and administration that has been visible on the field of play?
E)        The danger of nationalism and anti-semitism.Whilst national identities can be explored and celebrated through football, in many countries in Eastern and Central Europe forms of nationalism, xenophobia and anti-semitism pose huge problems for both the football and state authorities.
